Art design in the pocket

–>” Autodesk is putting the fun in your pocket” review

Autodesk is proposing a “Lite” version for free of its iPhone app called SketchBook MobileX (for eXpress) in addition to the full featured one for $2.99.
Both come with a “community” website associate to the user’s creations (Alias Community).

I guess to perform such art design using the touchscreen of the iPhone you need to use a stylus and the one I found is awesome, the Pogo Stylus from Ten 1 Design.

3D CSS

Interesting demo which shows off hardware accelerated 3D CSS Visual Effects that are now supported using only the specific video tags standardized in the HTML 5 format (no flash, no java or 3D plug-in).
You can experience it within the latest Webkit nightly builds as well as Snow Leopard’s Safari builds.

“Who” trust?

This morning I open the Apple Apps countdown webpage on Safari 4 beta to check how far Apple is from the Billion of iPhone/iPod Touch applications downloaded. The countdown indicated 997+ millions.
I don’t know why I open the same page on Firefox 3.0.9 and guess what, the countdown didn’t give the same value: around 993+ millions of apps downloaded. I refreshed several times and delete the cache of both browsers but it’s still the same.

A consequence as there are pretty interesting gifst to win if you download the billionth app, which one can we trust?
Will the winner be choosen randomly?

Do you experience the same curious behavior?

Apple Apps Countdown

[update] I have tested it on Internet Explorer 8 and the countdown value is the same as Firefox gives.

Well Named!

Last week I experienced for the first time a bug on my MacBook Pro 15″ just after  a week out of the year warranty of course.
Working on Battery mode, the laptop was turning off when it was remaining 30% of energy. The only way to get it turned on was to plug the laptop to the power adapter. The issue occurred during all all the week. So after doing some investigations, I decided to call the Apple support on Friday night (8.00PM).
After 3 minutes of waiting, I got a Support Representative to whom I explained my issue during 10 minutes. She asked some basic questions: S/N of the laptop, version of the  OS,  the current battery capacity and the Battery-Loadcycles. Then, telling me that the MacBook is out of warranty, she explained me Apple will send me via FedEx a brand new battery free of charge if I respect the process she was describing me. The process was after receiving the FedEx package, replace the battery and send Apple back the old battery using the same FedEx box within 10 days (or Apple will charge the cost f the new battery, $129, after that delay).

The package arrived on the next Monday, I was able to follow the overall process on the Apple website, for the support request and the the FedEx tracking (sending from Apple in Pennsylvania and sending back to Apple in California). It took only 3 days to treat my support request. Everything was clear and went smoothly.
It gave me the feeling of having been fully and effectively supported, that Apple took care of my issue.

Well done.  That’s why the Apple Support Center is called Apple Care. Really Well Named.
Try to get the same support from a PC manufacturer after the warranty period.

A List for a Switcher (update)

I’m an Apple computer user  since 1984 so I was very pleased when a very Cultivated  and High talented mindset information system senior Architect, who I’m Proud to be counted as one of his friends, has decided to switch on September. I often told him instead of struggling every week with is PC on bugs, he should invest in a MAC for many obvious reasons. Congrats!!
Some discussions we had on that, gave me the idea to post what are my selection on MAC OS X.!

What is yours ?

Browsing: Mozilla Firefox by default. Shiira 2 or Sunrise are very good too.
Safari 3 is good. However, the plugins available for Firefox allow a better web navigation experience.
Shiira is a also very good alternative to Safari and sometimes to Firefox. Some interfaces features are very usefull such as a real fullscreen mode (like Coverflow in fullscreen) or PageDock. It proposes a new way to navigate within the tabs using a dedicated bar of snapshots/preview on the bottom of the browser.

RSS Reader: NetNewsWire. A good alternative is Vienna. (sometmes faster & more effective than NetNewswire)

Email: Mozilla Thunderbird (with Mozilla Lightning= Mozilla Sunbird plug-in)
Multi-OS with same features and behavior. Unfortunately, no Xobni yet!!

FTP: CyberDuck and/or FireFTP, a plugin for Firefox.

Brainstorming: XMind

Productivity: iWork for $79 (cheap compared to Mac Office 2008), however it’s worth it. The 3 tools, Pages, Numbers & Keynote, are very easy to use and powerful.

The free alternative is OpenOffice.org 3, although it’s still in beta version. Abiword if you’re only looking for a word procesing tool.

Online Productivity: Zoho and SlideRocket for awesome presentations available from anywhere

Text Editing: SmultronBeanTextWrangler

Media Player: VideoLAN

Imaging/Picture: Skitch. I use sometines also InkscapeSeashore and  Picnik,

3D creation: Blender

Notepad/Post It: Evernote

Micro-Blogging: twhirl

VPN client: Viscosity

P2P: Transmission

WiFi: coconutWiFi
Better tool than standard airport one to manage wireless connexion and get info on hotspot.

Uninstaller: AppCleaner.

Backup: Mathusalem (associated to Time Machine), iBackup

System Utilities: Onyx (or Deeper for less customization options), coconutBattery, DeployStudio (a very good system backup),

Automation: Quicksilver a hi-level very nice & powerful app launcher,

HDD scan utility: GrandPerspective

Burning CD & DVD: SimplyBurns

IM: Adium multiprotocols (14 in fact) on a same very nice & powerful GUI.

VoIP: Skype
because even iChat is much better for video conversation, it’s only on Mac OS X.  There are still more MS windows users than feline OS ones to discuss with.

Astronomy: Stellarium

Sport: TrailRunner. A must to have if you like runnng, hiking or biking.

Games: Battle for Wesnoth (Strategy), Quinn (Tetris-Like), Fexaze (puissance 4 like), Solitaire XL

iPod Audi

Several months ago, some posts informed folks that Volkswagen AG and Apple Inc were working closer on a new concept car dashboard based on Apple ‘GUI’ & products approach.

A Designer, Ondrej Jirec, is proposing his vision of this hypothetical partnership: a mix between Audi brand spirit (A3 platform)  and iPod/iTunes Store concepts, the Audi O.
Obviously, Glossy White color, Web connection, a 650 Gig Hard Disk Drive to store the online purchased music, a bluetooth connection to share your stuff with the other Audi O and unfortunatly an old fashion DJ Set turntable to play some playlist mixes hidden in the trunk are proposed.

BMW X5 “Touch”

As agreed with a post I read on a blog, Apple has always redefined its industrial sector through its products and even beyond by influencing the other sectors such as automotive.

The “joint team” 3M-Visteon presented on a BMW X5 SUV its concept of central console: X-Wave. Only one “click wheel” in the middle and “touch” sensitive commands all around. However, there is still a vibration feedback system to validate the acquisition and activation of the order chosen by the driver.
